The Story of Eight

Production image of prototype #74253 for the number eight. After endless design meetings, revisions, memos and massive budget overruns, this was one of the 5 finalists for the design of eight. After years of having been known as 7+1 (and for a brief time the cumbersome and unappealing VIII) the world would finally have a number they could be proud of. While this design did receive high praise for aesthetics and general pointy-roundy coolness, it was eventually discarded for the form that we have all become so accustomed to.

Interestingly enough the current design has been attributed to an intern at the Offices of Letters, Numbers, Symbols and Rodents. They were struck with the idea as they pondered which of the last two doughnuts to take while in one of the aforementioned endless design meetings(they decided to take both). Their manager immediately took credit for the idea but was later disgraced in The Great Umlaut Scandal and was finally killed in the Curly vs. Square bracket wars.
